长难句的理解一直是很多考生的软肋。看不懂句子，直接导致阅读速度慢、理解力差顺带导致听力也不好，因为看不懂句子，所以更听不懂。看不懂句子的原因大部分在于不会断句。
要想有效正确地断句，首先要了解英语中能称为句子的结构是怎样的。句子构成原则一：句子中至少包含必须一个谓语动词（包括动词的时态语态情态变化， 如果不清楚这三态的话，一定要去看下语法书，否则你写作也会有很大问题）。找到谓语动词之后，正确断句就变得很容易了。注意：动词ing和动词ed 这两种分词结构是不能充当句子的谓语的。

第二，影响我们断句的另外一个原因是从句的存在。从句虽然处于从属地位，但它仍然是句子，既然是句子，首先要符合句子构成原则一，另外，句子构成原则二：从句中有连接词。大家以后看从句的时候，不要再考虑什么关系代词关系副词先行词神马的，弄懂这个对你能不能读懂句子没有特别大的影响。只要清楚连接从句的有：that; 所有以W开头的特殊疑问词，还包括whether,是哪个词就表示什么意思，如果你硬要说where表示原因，那你肯定是脑子被门挤了; H 词，当然包括however、how often之类的。在句子构成原则二里，要注意一点，连接词前面有可能会有介词，比如by which 之类。

句子构成原则三：并列连词前后连接的成分一致。这条原则可以帮助我们判断句子的某一部分是跟从句并列还是主句并列。

了解好方法论之后，我们就开始实战。TPO 3中的一句话：

Estimates indicate that the aquifer contains enough water to fill Lake Huron, but unfortunately, under the semiarid climatic conditions that presently exist in the region, rates of addition to the aquifer are minimal, amounting to about half a centimeter a year.

先把前文所述的四种词找出来。根据前文所述原则，可以断句如下：
a. Estimates indicate …

b. but rates of addition to aquifer are minimal;

c. that the aquifer contains enough water to fill Lake Huron 是indicate的宾语从句；

d. under the semiarid climatic conditions

e. that presently exist in the region 修饰conditions;

f. amounting to about half a centimeter a year;

句子断清之后，就很容易理解了，只要一部分一部分翻译就行了：估计（estimate这里是名词）表明含水土层包含足够的水去填充休伦湖，但是不幸地是，在目前该地区半干旱的气候条件下，含水土层增加的速率很小，每年仅半厘米左右。

再来分析两句话：

1. Those who believe that drama evolved out of ritual also argue that those rites contained the seed of theater because music, dance, masks, and costumes were almost always used.

 

a. who believe that drama evolved out of ritual 整体作those的定语从句；

    b. that drama…ritual是believe 的内容；

c. that those rites contained the seed of theater是argue 的内容；

d. because music,dance, masks, and costumes were almost always used是人们这样argue的原因；

参考译文：那些认为戏剧是由宗教仪式演变而来的人还认为那些仪式孕育着戏剧的种子，因为仪式中音乐、舞蹈、面具和服装几乎总是被使用。

2. As the water that collects in the bottom of the nest evaporates, the water vapor rises and is heated by the incubating bird, which adds significant humidity to the incubation environment.

 

a. As the water evaporates; 随着/当水蒸发时…

b. that collects in the bottom of the nest修饰the water;随着/当…的水蒸发时

c. the water vapor rises and is heated by the incubating bird;

   d. which 引导的定语从句修饰整个句子；

参考译文：当被鸟巢底部吸收的雨水蒸发时，水蒸气上升并被孵蛋的鸟的体温加热，为孵化环境增加了很大湿度。
